How to Meet Your Neighbors After You Move

Now that you are settled in your new abode, it's time to get to know your new neighbors. Every neighborhood is different and you'll need to gauge the temperature. If you're lucky, some neighbors will ring you first and introduce themselves but others may be the type to keep to themselves or somewhere in-between. Gone are the days of your neighbor showing up with a basket of baked goods and a smile, but someone may surprise you with a nice gesture. Regardless, you will need to put yourself out there a bit and here are some ideas.

Wave: First thing is first, smile and wave when you see your neighbors. It's the first signal of friendliness and when you have the energy after unpacking and such, then you can pick up the pace more when ready.

Sit outside: If you have a porch or balcony, then take advantage of it and sit outside. You'd be surprised by how many people will say "hi" and chat with you, especially the dog walkers. If you don't have one, grab a couple of chairs. If you live in an apartment or condo building, sit in the lobby and you'll likely meet someone. Don't forget to talk to the front desk/concierge, as s/he may introduce you to someone if you stop and chat for a while.

Approach when they are not in a hurry: Maybe the neighbor is doing yard work, gardening, snow shoveling, grabbing their mail, walking their dog. Keep in mind that you should not talk to them for the first time when they are coming or going, as they are likely on a mission and might be in a hurry. Simply wave and catch them another time!

Take walks: We all need to get out into nature and get some exercise, so why not take a walk on the weekends and after work to see who you might meet.

Host a gathering: If the weather is nice, do it outside. You can always let people know you're still unpacking, so it will be casual and they will understand. If you're shy, you can print up flyers and drop them off, otherwise try to catch people in person and let them know to stop by for some refreshments.
