How to Move With Your Pets
Our pets can provide so much support to us but they can also induce some anxiety during stressful times, like moving. Here are some tips to try to reduce stress for both you and your loved ones!
- Most importantly, make sure your pet is properly identified with a tag that has your contact information.
- On moving day, the ideal situation is to keep your pet away from the move. Maybe a friend can take care of them or you can consider a kennel. If that is not an option, you have some options. Consider the garage or possibly emptying out one room out as much as possible. If needed, you can place the pet in a carrier for extra protection. Make sure you provide access to water and check in from time to time for things like food, walks, temperature checks, etc. Try to keep their routine as regular as possible.
- Take your pet in your own vehicle. Use a carrier to transport your pet between locations and do not let him or her out until you are inside your new home.
- Don't bring your pet to the new home until after the move has completed. Introducing them after some things are set up is best.
- If you are flying with your pet to your new home, you will need to make sure that your pet's vaccinations are current, providing the vaccination certificate to the air carrier and others.
- It's a good idea to create an essentials kit that includes everything you will need: food, water, dish, toys.
- Fish: If you are moving a long distance, we don't recommend you take your fish with you. Find a new home for those fish and find new fish for your bowl or tank once you arrive. If you are moving locally, it is best to transport your fish in bag with some of their tank water since fish can survive for a few hours this way. If you are unsure of the bag, visit your local pet or aquarium store for assistance.
- Be sure to update the microchip information once you move to the new address!
