How do you pack this stuff?! |
Packing Silverware to Move
Your silverware needs special care when packing for your move, not only because of precious metals requiring attention but because you need to make sure that any sharp edges are protected. Both you and your movers will appreciate being protected from your knives and fork tongs.
- If you have one, the best way to pack is to use your silverware tray as the packing mechanism.
- Option 1: Stack/bundle each group and bind it with a cord or band. Option 2: Wrap each bundle with paper and secure with tape.
- Once you have completed each utensil group, wrap the entire silverware tray with plastic wrap. We suggest wrapping around it a few times to secure it properly. If you don't have plastic wrap, try using paper or newspaper and taping it shut.
- Place the tray inside a moving box that has been cushioned on the bottom with packing paper. Then you can pack other kitchen items in the same box.
Don't have a silverware tray? Simply bundle each group as noted in #2 above by wrapping them in paper and then line them in the bottom of a cushioned box. You can then place a layer of kitchen towels on top and continue packing the box with other kitchen items.
Valuable Silver:
If you have a valuable silver set, we recommend that you polish all the pieces before packing them up. Ensure that each piece is dry and cover them with cloth or tissue paper before closing the special protective box, if you still have it.
Sharp Knives:
If you have some stored in a cutlery block, keep them in place. Secure each knife in place with tape so that it does not slide out of its slot. If you do not have a cutlery block, it is best to wrap sharp knives individually with 2-3 sheets of paper, making sure that the entire knife is secured inside. Roll the knife in the paper and secure with tape on both ends to make sure that it cannot slide out. If you don't want to use paper, a great way to repurpose your old t-shirts or towels is to use those for wrapping the knives instead of paper. For extra protection, you can use bubble wrap layer on top of the knives inside the box and you should be all set!
