How to Tell Your Children You Are Moving

The first thing you need to do if have a talk with your kids. This may not be easy, but you can do some things to soften the blow. It's best to give as much information as possible.
  1. Give your children as much notice as possible. They should have time to digest this news.
  2. Your children will follow your lead, so it's important for you to be positive about your move.
  3. Give them a job, engage them in the process of moving. Of course, determine something that is age appropriate.

10 Tips for Moving with Your Kids

Now that you've told your kids about the move, you need to get into the details. What's going to help you and your children get through the planning, moving day and integrating into the neighborhood.
  1. Stick to your routines. It's critical that children have their usual every day structure, so keep as much as possible through this transition.
  2. On the day of the move, consider having someone take care of the kids or hire a sitter. If that is not an option, give them an activity that will keep them busy while the movers are packing up. For toddlers, a pack 'n play or other confined area would work.
  3. Let your kids be part of decision making, something small. That way they will feel involved and have some control, giving them some peace of mind.
  4. Do as much as you can while the kids are at school or are napping/sleeping.
  5. It's time to throw out the junk that the little ones have accumulated in their rooms. Some of it can be donated, but a lot of it is ready for the trash and should not be packed.
  6. Is there a change in schools with this move? If so, be sure to notify the school officials and have the records transferred for the new enrollment process.
  7. Hosting a goodbye party for your children will allow for a smoother transition.
  8. Pack an overnight bag for each child. This includes everything that s/he will need that first night and next morning, from clothes to medication.
  9. Unpack your kids rooms first. Make them as comfortable as possible.
  10. Meet the new neighbors. If they have children, they may find new playmates to ease some loneliness in the new neighborhood.
